Week 6 Lab Microfiction: The Astronaut and the Bombs

6 Word Story:
"Where's my tether?" said the astronaut.
Drifting Away...

25 Word Story:
When he left the city, he wasn't the same man anymore. Actually...nobody still alive was the same anymore. Atomic radiation can change a person.
After the Apocalypse

Author's Note:
Wow, six-word stories are hard. I looked up some examples and was blown away by the creativity that people displayed in their six-word versions. However, I actually think that reading some examples made it harder to come up with a novel idea. Also, given the themes of my last microfiction, I really wanted to avoid anything depressing sounding. Which, unfortunately, is what many microfictions center around. If I had to give some inspiration for this story, I guess I'd credit the movie Gravity just for the whole drifting away in space idea. The 25-word story was a little more fun and easy to write given the latitude I had. I wanted to try and build the story backward, suggesting an ending and then letting the reader imagine the events leading up to it. The Fallout series would be a good source of inspiration for this story. Let me know what you thought of these short stories!

  1. Hi Rhys! I loved both of your short stories! They are both perfectly written and surprising. I especially liked the one about radiation, I did not expect the story to be about a nuclear apocalypse, but it makes total sense. I did some microfiction myself and honestly it is incredibly hard, so congrats on making it work!

I honestly love learning and school. In fact, I plan on pursuing a career in academia as a psychology researcher. Essentially, I plan on never ...

Week 9 Story: The Dreams of Sun Wu Kung

Asleep. I've been asleep for so long. Years? Decades? Centuries? I cannot tell. What else can I do trapped beneath a mountain? I sleep. And I dream. I dream of my life before this imprisonment. I dream of the day that I emerged from a stone, high atop the Mountain of Flowers and Fruits. I dream of the simple life that I had among my ape brethren. Of the days of joy before they made me their king. I remember the day that I became the King of the Monkeys. I remember the great waterfall and the secret cavern behind it. I wish I knew back then where my ambition would lead me. Most often I dream about immortality. I dream of the fateful day when I decided that I would not be constrained by the mortality of a living being. I remember it clearly. Too clearly. It always brings me pain. I remember how, on that day, I witnessed the deaths of my friends for the first time. I saw the pain and misery on their families' faces. That day I made a vow to become imm...

Week 11 Story: Heart and Mind

"We have a problem." Raven looked up to see Man approaching him from across the sandy beach. Raven had been relaxing, content after the creation of so many beings. But here came Man, apparently with a problem. How can there be a problem?  Thought Raven.  I only just created life on this planet. It should all be perfect. At least for now. Man sat down beside Raven and sighed deeply.  "I'm sorry to say this Raven, but there is an issue with one of your creations," he said. "An issue? How could this be? I made everything perfectly!" Raven replied. "Yes," Man responded. "All of the creatures that you intentionally created are perfect. But..." Raven immediately grasped his meaning. Of all of his creations, only one had been accidental. "My friend," Raven said. "What misfortune befalls you? What issue has reared its head to afflict mankind?" "Come," said Man. "Fo...
